Mobilizing Volunteers in Times of Disaster

How can I help in times of emergency ?

In an emergency,  volunteers may be needed to
-  cook,
-  drive trucks,
-  answer phones,
-  pack sandbags,
-  and many other tasks.

Volunteers will also be needed to staff a Volunteer Mobilization Center.  A Volunteer Mobilization Center provides a place to organize volunteers so that people who want to help know where to go so their skills can best be used.

Upcoming Disaster Preparedness Trainings for 2010

The American Red Cross- Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter, The Volunteer Action Center, and The Local Emergency Planning Committee are happy to provide you with the following disaster preparedness training opportunities. All training opportunities are free, but some classes are a prerequisite for the next class so they must be completed in order. Classes are expected to fill quickly so please register early. Everyone can register by either calling the American Red Cross, Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter at 304-485-7311 OR by e-mailing Wilma at millerwj@citynet.net. Feel free to ask any questions pertaining to the training schedule or class content. If you are registering on behalf of a group six or more but none of the following dates are available, please inform the Red Cross and they will be happy to bring the training to your facility.

All the following training will be at the American Red Cross Chapter (220 8th Street) unless otherwise notified.

The Wood County Emergency Management has implemented a new rapid emergency public notification system. The new system provides rapid call technology to notify the community quickly pertaining to threats and everyday public safety needs.

The County Emergency Services has acquired all of the public local carrier telephone numbers. “They do not have” cell phone numbers or other voice devices that are utilized by the public. Therefore, if you have a cell phone or another voice device and wish to have those numbers added to the County Emergency Call List, please do one of the following:

1.Call the Emergency Services Office at 304-420-0911 and ask to speak with Mary Beth or Ed Hupp

or

2.Go to the county website located at www.woodcounty911.com or www.woodcountywv.com and find the logo depicted below. Click on it and you will be prompted to enter your address and the associated device telephone numbers.
