Special Housing Grants for Vets---Veterans entitled to compensation for permanent and total service-connected disability. Specialty Adapted Housing Grant of not more than 50% of the cost of building, buying or remodeling adapted homes or paying debtedness on those already acquired, up to a maximum of $38,000. Home Improvement and Structural Alteration Grants (HISA), another grant, may help pay for improvements necessary to provide access to the home and essential sanitary facilities. For alterations, the VA will pay up to $1,000 for a veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 50% or more. The department will pay up $1,200 to other veterans eligible for outpatient care.
